Kwanzaa, which means “first fruits of the harvest” in Swahili, honors African heritage in the African-American culture. It lasts one week, beginning on December 26 and ending on January 1, with each day devoted to one of the seven core principles, known in Swahili as Nguzo Saba. Here is your guide to Family-Friendly Kwanzaa Events & Celebrations in NJ and Beyond.
Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles)
- Umoja (Unity): Join together as a family, as a community, and as a nation.
- Kujichagulia (Self-determination): Speak up for ourselves and plan our own futures.
- Ujima (Collective work and responsibility): Work together to solve problems.
- Ujamaa (Cooperative economics): Support African-American stores and businesses.
- Nia (Purpose): Choose a goal and work toward it little by little.
- Kuumba (Creativity): Use all of our own talents and appreciate the talents of others.
- Imani (Faith): Believe in our parents and community leaders. Believe that African-Americans will win the struggle for equality.
